Fit and comfort
A bridle should fit without pinching: the browband sits below the ears without rubbing, the noseband allows room for the bit and jaw, and the headpiece sits comfortably behind the ears. Padded, shaped headpieces help relieve poll pressure.
Choosing reins
Reins come in plain, rubber-gripped, laced and web styles. Rubber or laced reins give extra grip in the wet; the right choice comes down to feel, your discipline and the weather you ride in.
Looking after leather
Clean tack regularly with saddle soap, condition it to keep the leather supple, and check stitching and billets for wear. Well-maintained leather tack is both safer and longer lasting.
