For the Horse

Turnout rugs are waterproof, breathable rugs worn in the field to protect a horse from rain, wind and cold. They are the hardest-working rugs in most wardrobes, so durability and a good fit matter as much as warmth.

Choose the fill weight to suit the weather and your horse, and look at the denier of the outer for an idea of how tough and tear-resistant the rug will be in the field.

Denier and durability

The denier rating describes the thickness of the outer fabric's fibres, common ratings run from around 600D for everyday use up to 1200D+ for tougher, more tear-resistant rugs. Playful or field-kept horses benefit from a higher denier.

Choosing the fill

A lightweight or no-fill turnout keeps rain off in mild weather; a medium (around 200g) rug suits cooler, wetter spells; and a heavyweight (300g+) rug is for cold winter conditions or clipped horses. Many owners keep two or three weights.

A secure, non-slip fit

Look for twin surcingles, adjustable leg straps, a shaped neck and a tail flap. These keep the rug in place as the horse moves, grazes and lies down, preventing rubbing and slipping.

Turnout Rugs: your questions answered

A breathable rug lets moisture and heat from the horse escape while keeping rain out. This helps prevent the horse sweating and keeps the coat healthy underneath.

Leg straps should be linked through one another and adjusted so the rug sits securely without the straps hanging low enough to catch a leg. Follow the rug's fitting instructions.
