In summer, biting insects can cause real misery, from constant irritation to allergic skin reactions such as sweet itch. A well-fitted fly rug provides a physical barrier that reduces the number of bites and helps protect sensitive horses.
Mesh fly rugs are light and breathable so horses stay cool, and many add UV protection to help prevent dark coats bleaching in strong sun.

Coverage for sensitive horses
For horses prone to sweet itch, look for maximum coverage, a belly flap, a combined neck and, in some designs, a tail flap. The more skin that is covered, the fewer bites get through.
Comfort in the heat
A fly rug should be light and breathable so the horse does not overheat. Fine mesh and good ventilation matter, as does a fit that allows free movement at the shoulder.
Fly protection as part of a routine
A fly rug works best alongside good management: fly masks, repellents where appropriate, and avoiding turnout at peak insect times. Together these reduce irritation far more than any one measure alone.
Fly Rugs: your questions answered
