Breeches and jodhpurs are the foundation of a rider's wardrobe.
Breeches and jodhpurs are the foundation of a rider's wardrobe. A well-fitting pair gives you a secure, consistent position and a close contact with the saddle, without bunching or rubbing over a long session.
You will find full-seat breeches for dressage and schooling, knee-patch breeches for jumping and general riding, and children's jodhpurs designed for comfort and easy dressing. Not sure which suits you? Read jodhpurs vs breeches.

Full seat or knee patch?
Full-seat breeches have a grip panel across the seat and inner leg, favoured by dressage riders for a secure, consistent contact. Knee-patch breeches have grip at the knee only, giving more freedom for jumping and a lighter feel for general riding.
Getting the size right
Breeches are usually sized by waist measurement, sometimes with separate leg lengths. They should fit snugly without digging in; most contain elastane so they move with you. If you are between sizes, consider how you like to layer underneath in winter.
Grip and fabric care
Silicone grip performs best when it is kept clean and free of fabric softener residue. Wash grip breeches inside out at a low temperature, fasten them first, and avoid tumble drying, which can damage the grip over time.
Jodhpurs & Breeches: your questions answered
Ankle-length breeches are worn with long riding boots, or with short boots and half chaps. Jodhpurs are longer and worn with short jodhpur boots.
Many dressage riders prefer full-seat breeches for the extra security and consistent contact they provide through the seat, although it comes down to personal preference.
Measure your natural waist and your hip at the widest point, then check these against our size guide. If you ride in winter layers, factor those in.
