For the Rider

A riding helmet is the single most important piece of equipment a rider owns. A correctly fitted, certified hat is designed to help protect the head in a fall, and it should be worn every time you ride or handle horses from the ground where appropriate.

Protection depends on two things: the helmet meeting a current safety standard, and it being fitted correctly to your head. We strongly recommend professional fitting, and replacing any hat that has taken a fall or significant impact. Many riders pair a hat with a well-fitted body protector too.

Understanding safety standards

UK riding hats are tested to recognised standards, which may include PAS 015, VG1 and Snell E2016 among others; some disciplines and bodies specify particular standards. Always check which standards your activity or competition requires, and look for the hat's own certification before buying.

Why professional fitting matters

A hat only protects if it fits. A trained fitter will check the shape and size against your head, ensure the harness holds the hat level and secure, and advise on the right model. Fit should be snug all round with no pressure points or gaps.

When to replace a helmet

Replace a helmet after any fall or impact, even if no damage is visible, because the protective liner is designed to absorb a single impact. Many manufacturers also recommend replacement after a number of years of normal use.

Riding Helmets: your questions answered

Check that it carries certification to a current standard accepted for your activity, that it is correctly fitted, and that it has never suffered a fall or impact. If in doubt, ask a qualified fitter.

Hat size is based on the circumference of your head in centimetres, measured around the widest point above the ears and eyebrows. A fitter will confirm the size and shape in person.

Yes. The impact-absorbing liner is designed to work once. Even with no visible damage, its protective ability may be reduced, so a hat should be replaced after any significant impact.
