Horse Boots & Leg Protection

Horse boots protect the vulnerable lower leg from knocks during schooling, jumping, lunging and turnout, and from injury during travel.

For the Horse

Horse boots protect the vulnerable lower leg from knocks during schooling, jumping, lunging and turnout, and from injury during travel. The right boots depend on the work your horse does and where they are most at risk.

A good fit is essential: boots that are too loose can slip or let in grit, while boots that are too tight can rub or restrict movement.

Types of leg protection

Brushing boots protect against the opposite hoof striking the leg; tendon and fetlock boots are used for jumping; and travel boots or bandages protect the legs in transport. Overreach boots guard the heels from the hind feet.

Fitting boots correctly

Boots should sit snugly against the leg without pinching, with any strike pad over the inside of the leg. Fasten from the top down and check they are neither so tight they restrict the tendon nor so loose they slip.

Keeping boots clean

Grit trapped inside a boot can rub and cause sores, so rinse and dry boots after muddy or sandy work. Neoprene and synthetic boots are quick to clean and dry.

Horse Boots & Leg Protection: your questions answered

Brushing boots protect the lower leg and fetlock from injury caused by the opposite hoof brushing against it, common in schooling, lunging and faster work.

Some owners use turnout or brushing boots for horses that knock themselves in the field, but boots must fit well and be checked regularly, as mud and grit can cause rubbing if left on for long periods.
